Often in the world of cinema, music is added to movies for many reasons and in many ways, mainly for the function of enhancing the movie itself. Music is a way of communicating emotions and feelings in a different form of expression than just words and when it is added to a movie it compliments it brilliantly. In movies, music is used primarily to express emotions felt by the characters due to what they are experiencing. In The Wedding Singer, music is also used for this purpose, and the movie itself is centered around the world of music. “Grow Old With You”, written and performed by Adam Sandler, was a vital song in The Wedding Singer. The song accompanies the climactic scene when Julia (Drew Barrymore) visits the house of Robbie (Sandler) who she thinks she may be in love with, and is met at his door by his ex-fiance who left him at the altar, wearing his clothes and acting as if they were back together. After leaving dramatically and throwing her gift for Robbie on the ground, Julia went immediately back to her fiancé Glen, notoriously known for his jerk-like tendencies, and told him that she wanted to go to Vegas to get married to him. Robbie rushes to the airport to chase after the Julia, the woman he loves, and when he finds her on the plane, he sings this song to her. Because it was written solely for the movie, this song was not well known when the movie came out and not very well known currently. This song enhances this moment in the movie because it expresses Robbie’s true, pent-up feelings for Julia while still remaining true to his character. The song is played at the climax of the movie, when the viewer wonders whom Julia will choose, her scum of a fiancé or the love of her life who cares just as much about her as she does him (although they haven’t expressed it to each other). The song is cute and thoughtful, clearly meant for a lover, but still silly and clever enough to be called an Adam Sandler song. After the moment being built up for so long in the movie, this song gives the viewer a sigh of relief, knowing now that Robbie finally told Julia how he felt. The song states such romantic sentiments as, “I’ll miss you, I’ll kiss you… need you”. However, the true character of Robbie shines through with lyrics such as, “I wanna…carry you around when your arthritis is bad” and “I’ll…even let you hold the remote control”. Perhaps the most applicable l (and somewhat ironic) lyrics are “put you to bed when you’ve had too much to drink”, because just a few nights before Julia had too much to drink and got sick, and Robbie helped her. This song fits the scene perfectly because it is Robbie himself who sings it, so it acts as an emotional confession of his feelings to Julia. No other song would be as applicable as this one is, purely because of its sentimental value. Music in movies is used as a way to express emotions felt by characters in a way that is different than just plain dialogue. In The Wedding Singer, music is a key form of expression. Many songs are used to display emotions felt by the characters, and one of these songs is “Grow Old With You”.
This is my 7th year teaching English at Norton High School. I recently earned a Master of Arts in English at Bridgewater State College. I love my job and the people I work with! I spend as much vacation time as possible visiting new places. I love to travel! :)
